Practice Makes Perfect(ish)

The real reason consistency matters.

As Malcolm Gladwell writes in his bestselling book Outliers, the key to mastering a skill is practice, and "ten thousand hours is the magic number of greatness."

While this may have been an oversimplification of what it takes to become an expert at something, we believe that the sentiment holds true when it comes to building an online presence for your business. But not for the reason you might think.

The truth is, no matter how long and hard you “practice,” your digital marketing will never be perfect. And that’s actually a good thing!

The most successful businesses are those that are constantly looking for ways to improve. They are listening to their customers, looking inward, and taking action to better serve their community. This applies to digital marketing, which should be agile, responsive, and ever evolving.

So what are the benefits of “practicing” digital marketing?

  • Practice boosts confidence. When you build an online presence for your business, you “practice” every time you interact with your community. Some days you will get it right, and others not so much. But if you show up, engage in the conversation, and stay true to your brand values you can be confident that your audience will forgive a negative experience from time to time.
  • Consistency increases visibility. You can’t build an online presence if no one can find you online. It’s that simple. Brands that consistently communicate with their community see more engagement with their digital content, which allows them to reach more customers as they are propelled higher by social media algorithms.
  • Repetition builds strength. Many of our clients feel overwhelmed by digital marketing, so they put it off or don’t do it at all. Why? Because learning new things is hard! You have to build muscles you didn’t know you had. But when all is said and done, you will be stronger for it.

The good news is that practice doesn’t have to be painful. Armed with a plan, the right tools, and a supportive community, practice can be incredibly productive - even fun!
