How to showcase your knowledge, but protect your best asset... your IDEAS!

I speak to business owners every day who have yet to harness the power of digital marketing. One of their biggest hesitations comes from not wanting to give away their ideas.  They feel that if they talk about industry best practices, share projects they're working on, and talk about the ideas they have - that they'll open themselves up to competition to steal their ideas and reuse their ideas.

Fair enough. These are reasonable hesitations. I mean who wants to have their ideas stolen! Who wants to lose clients because someone stole YOUR ideas.

Here's the reality, let me shed some light on a few things:

  • You don't have to share EVERYTHING
  • If you don't show up to the party (online space) you'll miss out

Here's the dilemma - you need to be online.  It's 2016 if you aren't doing SOMETHING you are definitely missing new clients and opportunity. As much as you need to be sharing your expertise online you equally need to protect your ideas and knowledge.

The solution is simple. Share snippets. Take this blog for instance. This is only a tiny glimpse of my idea and method on how I help people showcase their thoughts, attract new business, AND protect their knowledge.

Where should you start:

  • Create a list of blog topics that you could potentially write about
  • Keep your articles/blogs at 300-400
  • Use bullet points instead of lengthy paragraphs
  • Give your audience enough to think, but obviously don't give away everything
  • Don't mention your client list (if that's a concern)
  • Give your audience the way to ask more questions and learn more

Seriously though, why do I need to write blogs?
Do you network? Make sales calls? You better believe people are looking online to find out more about you. It's not to say that if someone doesn't find anything that they won't hire you. But you aren't making it easy on them. You aren't helping them say YES to you. Showcase your personality and your expertise and shorten the sales cycle.

I hope this encouraged someone to share.  Remember blogs/articles are great content builders for social media.
